The Project: The project was a full gut (the space was fully demoed and stripped back to the framing) so we could improve kitchen and living room functionality and overall flower of the space.
The Client: This client is a young family, two working professionals that spend a lot of time in their home (working from home / family life).

The goal was to create a more open floor plan and to make more space for the kitchen because the existing kitchen was narrow and cramped. The client does a lot of baking/cooking and really wanted a kitchen that was more functional and less separated from the rest of the living space.
They also wanted to make better use of the family room because the existing space was dark and not very inviting. It was a fairly large part of the home that wasn’t being used.

The home is a split level, with the kitchen/dining/living room on one level and the front entrance/family room on another. This resulted in some limitations on redefining the existing spaces and making sure that selected materials would work (functionally and style wise) throughout adjoining rooms.
We removed interior partitions from the kitchen to open up space and create an eating area. We removed old bulkheads from the living room and upgraded the lighting, and we added a wood-burning insert into the existing fireplace for both functionality and ambiance.

The project was carried out through the winter months so there are always technical challenges with renovation in colder weather, particularly when you’re removing insulation. After demolition,we had to move fairly quickly to get utilities run so that the space could be reinsulated. We employed temporary heaters to keep the house warm to prevent any water lines from freezing.
Plumbers and electricians worked quickly to get their utilities run in a timely manner.

We collaborated with Jen Robinson Design to tie the various spaces within the home together with a cohesive design. Opening up the kitchen to the dining area and family room made the space more inclusive, inviting and comfortable to work in.

We were also invited to the housewarming party that the clients held so we took that as a nod to a job well done.
